an ode to last times.

We spend a lot of energy in anticipating the first times, but rarely think of the last ones.

We spend a lot of time thinking about our intimate relationships in terms of first times. Anxiety over the first date. The anticipation of the first kiss. Meeting the family for the first time. But we spend little, if any, time, thinking about the last times.

We didn’t spend our holidays in 2019 thinking this could be the last time we travelled out of the state. The city, even.

When was the last time you danced? The last time you went camping? The last time you wrote in a journal?

We tend to take life’s little moments for granted. In our rush to achieve more, get more, have more, it’s easy to forget about taking the time just to experience. To enjoy your partner, your friend, your family - just for who they are. To enjoy the moment, just for what it is. To enjoy yourself, just because.

Even your first kiss with a new partner is the last time you’ll ever kiss them for the first time.

That’s the thing about last times. They are all around us. Every day, every action is a new last time.

There’s something beautiful in keeping that knowledge close by.
